I hate it when works gets in the way of me having fun, and I have been doing a lot of work lately. However, on a whim I did something I don’t normally do. My brother called in a favor (family members get unlimited quantities of these;-) and asked if I could help a friend with making a logo camera ready. The design was the result of a middle school art contest and I was asked to take the design and “tighten” it up so that it could be used in advertising collateral.

The first thing that should be said here is that I am a control freak, and I often mull and ponder days over logo designs. So normaly the idea of starting with somebody else’s work is a big no-no. Given the restraints, I jumped in with eyes closed and let go … and I actually had fun. The crystal image is not something I would have choosen to use, (mostly because I did not conceive of it — and yes I am that egotistical.) The overall design, however, wasn’t bad (I’ve seen a lot worse) and concentrating on what I could do freed me up to make baseline design and illustration decisions to really make it shine.

Over all, I think it came out pretty nice.
